Meet, Astrid!

Time to meet our newest friend from Saturday's auction!

Meet Astrid

When we first saw this bay mare in the pen, she was shut down—quiet, distant, and disconnected from everything around her, including the filly we now know is her daughter.

There were three mares in that pen, all standing still and stiller. It took us almost the whole day to figure out which one was the baby’s mom. It wasn’t until the filly finally nursed that we knew it was Astrid. In fact, she was originally brought into the sale ring alone and they had to send her back out to go get her baby!

She’s not a bad mom—just one who’s likely seen more than her share of stress, change, and survival. Her Coggins test says she went through the Billings auction in November, and somehow ended up in South Dakota several months later, back in auction now with a one-month old baby at her side. Now that she’s safe, we’re hopeful she’ll start to reconnect. Already, we’ve seen her standing protectively over both the filly and the 3-year-old gray mare in the pasture as they nap.

We chose the name Astrid, a quiet but strong name from Sunrise on the Reaping, for a mare who seems to be slowly waking up to the idea of peace.

Thank you for helping us bring her home.

She didn’t show much in the auction ring—but that doesn’t mean she didn’t deserve more.

This month’s auction name theme was inspired by Sunrise on the Reaping, where the name is spelled Asterid.
