#HomefortheHolidays Highlight - Phoebe

#HomefortheHolidays Highlight - Phoebe

Phoebe is an Arabian mare who is estimated to be in her early 20s. Another extremely skinny auction save, she's gained weight and is doing well on a full senior diet (6-9 qts of senior feed, twice a day) and is offered full choice hay, though she can't really eat it.
Phoebe is smart, energetic and was said to be a 4H horse in her previous life. She's easy to handle though can play hard to get in pasture and can be easily intimidated by other horses around gates and other areas. This has led to her nickname of "Wrecking Ball" as she will bolt to get through the gate and to her stall, sometimes being oblivious to anyone or anything in her way. She's working on that every day but is something to watch.

Phoebe has accepted a saddle but since she needed to gain weight we haven't evaluated her under saddle. She does have various physical ailments that make her ready for retirement including vision loss in her left eye and a large tumor (likely a benign melanoma) at her throatlatch. She had a couple incidents of light choke when she first arrived because she was bolting her food, and that will be something to watch with her tumor, but it doesn't really affect her much. Another rescue recently removed a similar tumor from a horse her age and that has inspired us to look into the option of removal, however his was affecting his ability to swallow and so far, Phoebe's is not.
Phoebe could likely still do light riding and leadline, but we'd really love to see her retire. She's earned it.

It's time for our 10th Annual #HomefortheHolidays Adoption Event! Days are short and dark, it's cold, and we are full to the brim with horses. What better time to give a special horse a new home?
This year we are focusing on select Pasture Pal and Adoptable Horses with reduced adoption fees. Check out https://www.gentlespirithorses.org/.../time-for-the-10th... for full details!

Here are the eligible Pasture Pals who would love to be your new best friend. They are looking for companion homes for various reasons - age, chronic conditions, or even just anxiety. But all have big hearts and a lot to offer to someone who will give them their final home for however long that may be.

Do you have room for one or two of them?
#HomefortheHolidays adoption appointments will be held between Dec 26 and Dec 31, 2023, and will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so don't wait to apply!
