One Year Ago Today… Winnie Got Her Second Chance!

At just 8 months old, Winnie stood in the auction ring with a completely turned-over hoof — the result of contracted tendons likely present since birth and never treated. Most people wouldn’t have given her a second glance. We brought her home expecting to give her a peaceful, compassionate end… but her story was far from over.

Her x-rays showed open joint spaces, no arthritis, and no bone fusion — all things that were absolutely critical in even considering treatment. If any of those had been present, it likely wouldn’t have been fixable, and we would’ve had to make a much different decision.

While surgery is usually only done before 6 months, both our standard and surgical vets felt she was a great candidate and a valuable teaching case.

So, on June 18, 2024, Winnie underwent surgery:

🦴 Her deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) and two branches of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) were cut
💉 Her coffin joint was injected for comfort and inflammation
👟 She wore a special shoe and a removable cast for two weeks to support the healing process
And it worked.

💫 Fast forward one year:
Winnie is strong, playful, balanced, and kind. She runs and plays like any other 2-year-old, her hoof has nearly grown out normally, and she’s thriving.

Earlier this month, she made her show ring debut at our Bug Club FUNdraiser — placing 1st in in-hand ground poles and showing off her sweet, steady temperament.

Her leg still turns out slightly, but she’s more balanced than ever, and our vets expect it to continue to improve as she grows.
Winnie’s story is a reminder that rescue takes thoughtful choices — it’s not just about saving, but about setting horses up to thrive. Her recovery shows what’s possible when we look at the whole picture — age, x-rays, prognosis — and make decisions with both compassion and a clear path forward.

Her recovery is a beautiful example of what’s possible when rescue decisions are backed by vet care, diagnostics, and support.

If you’d like to help us provide that same thoughtful care to future horses, donations are always welcome. 💜
