Welcome, Paris!
Paris came into Gentle Spirit's care today following a difficult situation involving law enforcement. She is a senior mare who is blind, possibly deaf, and has severely overgrown hooves. Despite all that, she's super sweet and trusting and we're happy to get to know her.
We were contacted at the last minute by her owner, after law enforcement had reached the point of impoundment. With limited resources and no appropriate place to provide the care Paris needed, euthanasia had been scheduled.
Once contacted, we reached out to the State Veterinarian and the county to offer an alternative. After considerable discussion, and thanks to the willingness of everyone involved to work together, we were able to have the owner sign her over to us and picked her up today - just a short 24 hours after we were first contacted.
We're grateful for the opportunity to give her a chance, but we're also realistic. There is a significant possibility that the damage to her feet is too extensive for us to restore a good quality of life.
Our first priority is to assess her hooves and determine whether trimming can significantly improve her comfort and mobility. If it can, she'll need additional X-rays, a dental examination, and ongoing care.
We don't know what Paris's future holds yet. But whatever the outcome, we're grateful to the State Veterinarian and county officials for trusting us to give her this opportunity.
If you'd like to help support Paris and the horses in our care, donations are always appreciated.
